Overhung Centrifugal Pumps (OH)

The workhorse. Highest-volume, most commonly specified pump category across industry. ANSI B73.1, ISO 2858/5199, and API 610 OH1 through OH6 configurations dominate everyday service.

Between-Bearings Pumps (BB)

Mission-critical, but not bread-and-butter from a volume standpoint. API 610 BB-type designs are specified when failure shuts down a unit, pipeline, or generating station.

  • Higher flow and head than overhung designs can stably support
  • Rotor supported between two bearings — excellent rotor stability and reduced vibration
  • Engineered for long continuous operation in mission-critical service

Essential, prestigious, high-dollar — but far fewer units shipped than overhung pumps. A typical refinery may operate hundreds of overhung pumps and only a handful of between-bearings. Volume is low; consequence of failure is high.

Vertical Pumps (VS)

Bread-and-butter only within specific industries. API 610 VS1 through VS7 designs cover vertical turbine, line-shaft sump, cantilever, and double-casing barrel configurations.

Strong Presence In

  • Municipal water & wastewater — raw water intake, distribution boost, lift stations
  • Cooling water intakes — power plants, large industrial facilities
  • Sumps and pits — drainage, dewatering, process collection

Why The Vertical Configuration Exists

  • Site or suction conditions make horizontal pumps impossible
  • Suction source is below grade (open basin, pit, sump, river)
  • NPSH-limited services where vertical configuration provides natural suction head
  • Footprint constraints favor vertical orientation
Not universal across all industry — but dominant in water, wastewater, and large infrastructure. Often the only viable architecture for a given suction condition. If suction is below grade or NPSH is tight, vertical is the answer.

Positive Displacement Pumps

Niche but critical. PD pumps are specialists — chosen with intent for high-pressure, high-viscosity, and precise-flow services that centrifugal pumps cannot handle.

For Vertical Pumps
